Comic Book Review of: Gnome by Dave Dwonch

Gnomes!

Action!

Romance!

Mean neighbors!

I never thought I’d see the day that I would read a comic book about a Gnome and enjoy it. Written and illustrated by Dave Dwonch, Gnome (presented by Super Real Graphics) tells the tale of Andy Rutfield; a down-on-his luck guy who’s just moved to a new town and recently acquired his uncle’s home.

Little does he know about the massive danger that lurks beneath his house and the one Gnome that needs his help in order to save the world from doom.

There are a lot of positives about this book. For starters, the chemistry between the Gnome & Andy is great. The writing makes them play off of each other as if they were a comedic Yoda & Luke Skywalker.

All the characters in the book have a specific role to play and no one is underused. Not only that, but you get a lot of background information about the Gnome and who he is without it being forced down your throat. Other writers would have spread this out over a massive amount of pages while Dwonch does with a minimal amount of paper, maximizing the overall effect of the character.

The artwork style is innovative and vibrant. What he does with the background settings also makes the characters in the story stand out in the pages. You can see the emotion, mood, and setting in all of Dwonch’s artwork.

Gnome is the first book I’ve read in one sitting in the past 10 years. Why? Because it was fun! Can you remember the last time you’ve read any comic book/graphic novel and had fun with it? Anyone who enjoys an amusing fantasy will get a kick out of this. My wife doesn’t care for comics at all and found it enjoyable. It’s a refreshing type of adventure that’s been missing from the big time comics publishers.

I would recommend this all-ages book to anyone that enjoys fantasy, adventure, comedy, or anyone that just wants to have a good read.

Gnome can be found at Target.com, Amazon.com, or your local comic book store. The Diamond retail code is FEB084007.
